The '''Sun Animatronic''' was an animatronic prop character built by [[Creative Engineering]] featured on the [[Rock-afire Explosion]] stage.It is a very simple figure that is located behind the tree/bush backdrop on the left side of center stage behind Dook.

== History ==

The first Sun animatronic debuted on august 14th 1981 at the Jacksonville, FL (9820 Atlantic Blvd) store.This version of the sun used a mask known as the ''beta'' sun,which was sculpted by Dave Thomas.It had some noticeable differences compared to the standard mask,with it having smaller,more circular hungover looking eyes with lopsided eyelids,thinner smile creases and sculpted on dimples.Early beta masks also had long eyelashes,though CEI often went back and forth on either using pieces of black fur or large fake eyelashes, <ref name="cep1">[https://youtu.be/LeL3kXX5yiw?si=MtkmsEccfU-IOLAz&t=36 youtu.be]</ref> with the first bot at Jacksonville using the fur. <ref name="cep2">[https://archive.org/details/1981-rock-afire-postcard archive.org]</ref> These early masks also had more detailed and intricate shading and differently painted lips.Over time certain elements would stop being added to these beta masks,most notably the eyelashes started to be just painted on,the dimples stopped being painted in and the lips were painted on bigger. <ref name="cep3">[https://www.reddit.com/r/Animatronics/comments/1q8txa4/my_new_rockafire_items/ reddit.com]</ref> This mask would be used until the October 1981 batch.

In the January 1982 batch,a new sculpt for the sun mask would be introduced.This sculpt had more almond shaped eyes,thicker smile creases,no dimples sculpted on,and just overall a much friendlier(though still hungover) appearance.Despite this some,of the suns from this batch,such as the one at the Colorado Springs, CO (5156 N Academy Blvd) location still used the early beta paint job,with the dimples painted on and thick shading around the outside.It's unknown why this was done.This was quickly corrected and the sun's final paint job started being used.

Sun animatronics would continue to be produced up until 1983. The January batch would be the last used inside ShowBiz Pizza restaurants, and would be kept and stored for future openings, while [[Creative Engineering]] would continue to produce bots until June. Now with a surplus of bots, these would need to be sold to other family entertainment centers.

It's important to note that early Sun mechanisms used to have a body turn,however this movement was never programmed and the valve it would've run on (valve nr.3) had it's ports plugged.After the initial production batch the body turn was removed.When the dual pressure valve was introduced valve nr.3 would be reused for it. <ref name="cep5" />
