Clown (Animatronic)
The Clown Animatronic is an animatronic character created by Creative Engineering Inc. for the IAAPA Trade Show that took place on November 7th 1984.He resided for mayny years in the basement of Orlando, FL (47 W Jefferson St) and currently resides at the Creative Engineering Museum.
History
The Clown is a retrofit of the Abuelito George (Animatronic) character built by Creative Engineering the year prior for the Hard Luck Bears installation at Mundo Mágico .The Clown was first installed at the entrance [1] of Creative Engineering 's booth at the 1984 IAAPA Trade Show. It was given the 'Clown Skit' a basic showtape for this event. It's unknown what was on this skit. The bot was then not bought by anybody and was sent back to Orlando, FL (47 W Jefferson St) At some point his original white gloved hands were removed. At an unknown point the Clown's head was removed/canibalised by a CEI emplyee to be used on another character, shortly after the clown was fully taken apart and wrapped up in plastic for storage. He would remain like that until 2015 when CavitySam took him out of the plastic [2] and put him back togheter, placing a set of Dark blue eyes inside the mask.He would stay in the basement until late 2023 when the Jefferson building would be emptied out to move the assets to the Creative Engineering Museum
The Bot currently resides on a dresser [3] in the Creative Engineering Museum
Design
The animatronic has a Red & Gold suit with red, blue and green pom pom buttons,a set of white gloved hands,a transparent clown collar with gold edges,a white painted face with red and blue accents,a big red nose and a rainbow colored wig.. The bot is in a Red & Yellow carousel like base made out of wood, with 4 white plastic poles holding up the top.
Mechanical structure
The Clown's mech is a very simple design, with it basically being a more rudimentary version of standard Creative Engineering torso frame and a standard headframe. The body is made up of 2 square aluminum bars welded onto an aluminum plate which attaches to the carousel base.In the middle of the plate,a 2-Bolt Flange-Mount Ball Bearing is attached. On top of the 2 bars there's a third shorter bar acting as the top of the torso frame, with a hole in the middle for the neck rod to go trough.A little over the middle of the right bar attaches a small aluminum block which the back of the head turn cylinder attatches to.The main head turn rod runs trough the whole bot from the 2-Bolt Flange-Mount Ball Bearing up to over the top of the torso piece where a mount for an E hinge is.Around the middle of the head turn rod there's 2 blocks mounted on.One attaches to the top of the head turn cylinder while the other to the bottm of the head up and down cylinders, which are mounted back to back. While the original head is not with the clown anymore and there's no photos of it,judjing by the movements it would've been just a standard CEI headframe, similar if not identical to that of the Beach Bear (Animatronic) but with no eye movemnts and eyelid close cylinders.
The bot used Cylinders made by Cylinders & valves inc. and Fabco-Air Inc.These cylinders are than actuated with Mac valves. It is unknown what control system the clown used.
