Penfield, NY (1614 Penfield Rd) was a Chuck E. Cheese's Pizza Time Theatre that opened on March 17, 1982, with a Balcony Stage and closed on September 16, 1996, with a 2-Stage.

Pre-Opening

Prior to the opening of Penfield, the University of Rochester invested $1.2 million in the franchising of Pizza Time Theatre stores across upstate New York, through which it received a 40% share of Rochester-based Pizza Concepts, Inc., which would later operate eight locations in New York. [1]

History

The Penfield Pizza Time Theatre opened on March 17, 1982, as the first ever Chuck E. Cheese's location in the state of New York. Additionally, Penfield was the 100th CEC ever opened [2]. The store opened with a Balcony Stage with the Harmony Howlette II (Balcony Stage Theme) featuring Harmony Howlette as the Guest Star [3] and with The King as the Lounge act. [4] Following the opening of Greece, NY (3160 W Ridge Rd) on March 15, 1983, the Penfield store became one of two locations in the Rochester suburbs. Sometime in the 1980s, Penfield received the Beach Bowzers. In 1989, Penfield's Balcony Stage was retrofitted into a Chuck E.'s House Facade, which remained until 1992, when the store's third and final stage, a 2-Stage, was installed. The Penfield 2-Stage was one of the first to be installed in the chain. In June 1994, the store changed and lowered all its prices. [5]

Closure

On September 16, 1996, the Penfield Chuck E. Cheese's permanently closed partially as a result of management not wanting to renew the lease [6] but otherwise due to unknown reasons. The site is now United States Postal Service and Advance Auto Parts.

Fate of the Animatronics

After Penfield's closure, the animatronics were auctioned off and disappeared for years until the opening of Plaza Oeste, Chile on January 2, 2011. As a result of the former Penfield Cyberamics being installed into the store, Plaza Oeste became the last CEC to open with Munch's Make Believe Band. The bots resided at the location until its closure on November 23, 2024. The bots were then sent to and reinstalled at Lo Barnechea, Chile to replace the store's existing bots, and remained there until the store closed on August 10, 2025. Following Lo Barnechea's closure, the Cyberamics were saved and are now in storage.
