The Antioch (Animatronic) was an animatronic prop character built by Creative Engineering featured on the Rock-afire Explosion stage.He is a simple figure, with his only movement being lowering from behind the large Cloud prop.
History
The first Antioch animatronic debuted on august 14th 1980 at the Jacksonville, FL (9820 Atlantic Blvd) store.He was originally known just as the Birthday spider,but later was given the name Antioch after the shopping center in which the first ShowBiz Pizza Place location in Kansas City (Antioch), MO (2726 NE Vivion Rd) as he wears a party hat and holds a birthday cake.This early version of Antioch was quite different compared to later bots,with him having a different more deranged looking mask with a human like nose.A more simple white cake with a yellow candle and no structure in his legs,allowing them flop around.This version would only be used for a short time in 1980. In 1981 [2] the design of the bot would change slightly,with thick metal poles being put into the body to keep the upper part of the legs staright,The mask would also get redesigned,using plugs of the original beta mask and hat,the 2 were made into one solid piece,making the nose bigger, and also giving him a neck. [3]
In the early batches of 1983,a new sculpt for Antioch's cake would made.This cake was more detailed and colorfull,it was still made of latex but now had a cardboard bottom [4].His hands are built into the sculpt itself,unlike the old cake which was separate from the cake and glued onto the hands,which he actually shared with Earl!
Antioch animatronics would continue to be produced up until 1983.The January batch would be the last used inside ShowBiz Pizza restaurants, and would be kept and stored for future openings, while Creative Engineering would continue to produce bots until June. Now with a surplus of bots, these would need to be sold to other family entertainment centers.
During Concept Unification process,Antioch's mech would not be used for anything,however Antioch's airlines [5] would be used for the Wink (Animatronic)
Design
Antioch is a black spider with a furry body holding a birthday cake that says happy birthday on top in red lettering(white cake with blue accents and a yellow candle pre 83,brown cake with yellow accents,blue plate and red candle 83 and on).He's wearing black sneakers on his 6 back legs and white toon gloves on his hands.He has 2 tufts of red hair coming out from under his white and red party hat,a red goatee,a crooked smile with buck teeth often painted on,a bright red clown like nose,and crazy crosseyed greenish yellow and black eyes.
Mechanical Structure
Antioch's mech is almost entirely made up of the Tolomatic Cylinder,which is mounted onto a 48x2x2 square aluminum tube with a few additional aluminum and steal pieces mounted onto the end of the cylinder to hold up a pair of casted plastic wheels and to guide the fishing line that holds up the spider across said wheels.The fishing line splits into 2 lines that each attaches to Antioch's back trough 2 metal hooks built into his foam body.
