Cupertino, CA (975 S De Anza Blvd) was a Pizza Time Theatre that opened in 1982 before being closed in early 1983 to be reopened as the first Zapp's Bar & Grill in May of 1983. The location would continue on for an unknown amount of time.
History
Zapp's
The store would reopen as the first Zapp's Bar & Grill in May of 1983.[1] The location was noted as wanting to create the "...same kind of video dining fantasy land that has made the company's chain of Chuck E. Cheese restaurants one of the USA's hottest businesses...". The goal would be targeting the 25-35 year old crowd that frequented T.G.I. Friday's and Bennigan's Tavern. The location is noted as having over 100 games, but only a quarter being video arcades, with the rest being items such as pool, shuffleboard, chess, darts, and backgammon. Private rooms are also provided with curtains. These rooms provide a telephone, a TV, and a big red button to summon a waitress.[1]
In January of 1984 Video Games magazine would review the location, describing the concept of the chain and some aspects of the store. The location was noted for holding arcade games, backgammon, shuffleboard, pool tables, three red-curtained private dining booths, TVs in all parts of the location, and "risque videotapes in the men's and women's restrooms". Zapp's is noted as more approachable and laid back than other bars.At this time, "Captain Zapp" is also mentioned as a new mascot for the arcade portion of the brand.[2]
